What a terrific post, Mary Hutchings Reed, a fellow SWP author, to show writers the joy of connecting with readers.  Connecting has, and always will be, the end game for me as a writer. It's when I do a little happy dance inside me!

Thank you Nancy.  I should note that unlike SWP, Ampersand is not a hybrid publisher.  I pay all costs, including marketing and I determine the print run.  Ampersand is a one-woman operation which just about started "Private" publishing twenty some years ago.  Ampersand offers no marketing support.  However, Ampersand does not publish any work she determines is not ready.  My second novel was on SWP's first list, but since then I have published only with Ampersand.

What a good piece on The Sentence, Paco! Enjoyed your examples of best beginnings. Oftentimes, I admit I don't give as much weight as I should to beginning sentences, as I'm more focused on the overall writing piece, and less on a micro part, the sentence, that can carry such a big punch. Thanks for reeling me back in to what's also important!

As a reader, I want to commend Nancy Gilbert on her wonderful piece "Writing Through Trauma." It was great to see how she took what she learned at a workshop and translated it into her writing.

As an About Write editor, I'd like to apologize for misnaming Nancy in the original e-blast about the article. It's probably a writer's worst nightmare. Thank you again, Nancy, for your submission and forgiveness.

Nancy, Bravo on your eloquent writing and glorious transcendence of your trauma. I especially enjoyed your flower and garden imagery. I too derive power from fresh flowers.I have found orchids to be a unique talisman for restoration and beauty  Thank you for helping us reconnect with the magic of flower  power!

Well stated piece on the Sentence draws upon masterful examples from such great talents. The lessons included in Dybek's Tosca were especially illuminating.

Inspires me to read Dybek's a finely crafted piece.

    Thanks Paco, wonderful job!

I can certainly relate! Thanks for your essay, Mary Driver, about your technical difficulties. You plowed through with grace and persistence providing inspiration that writers are not alone in these challenges.

Enjoyed reading Bruce's thoughts on writing advice and when to accept it as he points out a common sense approach that as a writer, I feel I may not always have! Also, many thanks for a new and different perspective to the much discussed "show don't tell."

A wonderful insight into the writer, Della Leavitt, as I can hear her voice telling her story,  "Chicago's Writing Community."  How inspiring to learn of writer's growth, her connections to other writers, and a commraderie that has all led to her destiny of Beyond Maxwell Street . Thanks for sharing your reflections and learned wisdom, Della!
