When writing starts to feel like a fight, it’s rarely about discipline. It’s about protection. We writers develop emotional patterns that keep us feeling safe but often hold our stories back. In this interactive session, developmental editor and story coach Sue Brown-Moore helps writers identify four specific patterns that shape creative resistance and shows how to gently redirect them into habits that support your writing instead of sabotaging it. You’ll learn which pattern most often appears in your own process, and how it shows up in drafting and revision. You'll draft a personalized Resistance Rewrite statement to help you recognize your pattern of resistance and discover your creative rhythm again. Then we’ll take the framework further by exploring how these same emotional patterns appear in your characters. You’ll learn how a hero’s “protective instincts” can drive believable motivation, deepen internal conflict, and create more authentic emotional arcs, leaving with practical tools to rebuild trust with your work, and renewed confidence in your ability to show up for your stories.
