All writers are familiar with the challenge presented by the silence on the blank page or screen, a void demanding to be filled.  In his four workshops on “Silence in Fiction,” Fred Shafer will discuss the times when, in a work of fiction that has begun to take shape, silence can become a meaningful presence that needs to be nurtured and sustained.

Writers will recognize these moments, he feels, once they become more closely engaged with the subtleties experienced by readers.  In looking at the spaces that appear throughout a narrative, he’ll test the relevance of Mozart’s classic statement, “The music is not in the notes but in the silences between.”

He’ll explore other forms of silence, occurring when there will be words in dialogue, narrative or descriptive passages, but the reader feels and understands things that aren’t on the page.  And he’ll take up the inevitable silence, which asserts its power and mystery at the ends of short stories and novels.

Fred Shafer was an editor with the international literary journal TriQuarterly, published by Northwestern University, where he taught fiction writing in the School of Professional Studies for many years.  He leads three private workshops, for advanced storywriters and novelists.

Fred will accept manuscripts with due dates September 1 and 8. Please see manuscript guidelines on the OCWW website: ocww.info for details.

We offer free student memberships at a discounted rate of $5.00 per session. You must send verification of your student status. Please contact Claudia Katz at ckatz17755@aol.com for details.
